With the home stretch coming into view, the penultimate stop of WESS takes in Sweden’s Gotland Grand National in October. Now in its 35th year, the Cross-Country race is also one of the world’s largest with up to 3000 riders expected to compete. A 22-kilometre long course weaves its way through some typically Scandinavian forestry on the small island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea off the east coast of Sweden. With winter closing in, weather conditions are always variable meaning everything from heavy mud to early showers of snow and ice can be expected.
Looking forward to its 35th year!
The starting area on the big field before the start has the appearance of a mirage of clean outfits and motorcycles, which are quickly transformed by the mud and the difficult terrain. The first competition was held in 1984 and has now been run for 34 consecutive years. The course, which is a unique blend of slippery limestone, terrain with water, mud and fast trails stretches approx. 22 kilometres with about 3000 participants from approx. 12 countries in total in all classes. Gotland Grand National, also called GGN, is an experience you’ll never forget.
